Using Mary with iManage
Last updated: February 23, 2026
How to Upload Documents from iManage
Quick answer: Mary integrates directly with iManage Cloud. If your firm uses desktop or on-premise iManage, you will need to export files to a local folder first, then upload them to Mary from your computer. Files with the .nrl extension cannot be processed -- export the actual documents instead.
Tip: If you're trying to find specific information in your documents, Fact Explorer may be the fastest route. Ask Mary a direct question and she'll find the answer with full source references -- no scrolling required. Look for the Fact Explorer tab on your matter.
If Your Firm Uses iManage Cloud
Mary connects directly to iManage Cloud. When creating a new matter or adding documents, you can browse and select files from your iManage workspace without leaving the platform.
In the upload step, select iManage as your document source.
Sign in with your iManage Cloud credentials when prompted.
Navigate to the workspace or folder containing your documents.
Select the files you want to upload to Mary.
Click "Upload & Continue" to begin the transfer.
If You Cannot Sign In to iManage
If the iManage sign-in window does not load, shows an error, or loops back to the sign-in screen:
Refresh the page and try the sign-in again.
Check that you are using your iManage Cloud credentials (not your firm's network login, unless they are the same).
Try in a private/incognito browser window to rule out cached session conflicts.
If your firm uses multi-factor authentication for iManage, ensure you complete the MFA step before returning to Mary.
If the issue persists, use the desktop export method described below as a workaround, and contact support@marytechnology.com so we can investigate the sign-in issue.
If Your Firm Uses Desktop or On-Premise iManage
Mary's direct integration supports iManage Cloud only. If your firm runs iManage as a desktop application or on-premise server, you will not see the option to connect directly.
Not sure which version your firm uses? If you access iManage through a web browser (e.g., cloudimanage.com), you are on iManage Cloud. If you open iManage as a desktop application or it is only accessible inside your firm's network, you are on the desktop/on-premise version.
To upload documents from desktop iManage:
Create a folder on your desktop (e.g., "Mary Upload - [Client Name]").
In iManage, select the documents you need for this matter.
Export or save them to the folder you created. Use your firm's standard export method (right-click > Save As, or drag to the desktop folder).
In Mary, select "Upload from computer" as your document source.
Browse to the folder and select your exported files.
Click "Upload & Continue" to begin.
What to Do About .nrl Files
If you export from iManage and see files with a .nrl extension, these are not actual documents. They are linked reference files that point to a document inside iManage but do not contain the document content themselves.
Mary cannot process .nrl files currently. They will either fail silently during upload or produce no chronology entries. We are looking to add this functionality in the near future. Please contact us at support@marytechnology.com if you require this.
To fix this:
Go back to iManage and locate the original documents that the .nrl files reference.
Export the actual files (PDF, DOCX, EML, or MSG format) rather than the linked references.
Upload the exported files to Mary.
If you are not sure how to export actual files instead of .nrl references, your firm's IT or knowledge management team should be able to assist with the iManage export settings.
Known Limitations
Limitations to be aware of:
Direct integration is available for iManage Cloud only (not desktop or on-premise installations)
.nrl files (linked references) cannot currently be processed. We are looking to add this functionality in the near future.
Files with duplicate filenames (common in email exports from iManage) may be silently skipped. Rename duplicates before uploading. See our article on duplicate filename issues for details
Processing uploaded documents consumes credits at approximately 1 credit per page. Credits are shared across all users at your firm.
If This Doesn't Resolve Your Issue
If the iManage Cloud connection fails repeatedly, try the desktop export method as a temporary workaround
If exported files do not upload successfully, check the file format -- Mary supports PDF, DOCX, EML, and MSG only
If you see a "network error" or "firewall" message during upload, this is typically an issue on our side, not your firm's network. Refresh and try again
If problems persist, contact support@marytechnology.com with a description of the issue and a screenshot if possible
