File upload limits and supported file types

Quick answer: You can upload up to 10,000 pages per session, with a maximum file size of 500MB per file and up to 500 files per session. Supported formats are PDF, DOCX, EML, and MSG.

Upload limits

  • Maximum file size: 500MB per file

  • Maximum pages per session: 10,000 pages

  • Maximum files per session: 500 files

Supported file types

Mary accepts the following file formats:

  • PDF -- court documents, medical reports, expert reports, correspondence

  • DOCX -- Word documents such as file notes, witness statements, draft pleadings

  • EML -- email files exported from Outlook, Thunderbird, or other email clients

  • MSG -- Outlook email message files

Other formats such as XLSX, PPTX, JPG, PNG, or TXT are not currently supported.

Converting unsupported file types

If your documents are not in a supported format, convert them before uploading:

  • Older Word documents (.doc): Open in Microsoft Word and save as .docx or export to PDF.

  • Emails: Export from your email client as .eml or .msg files. In Outlook, drag the email to a folder on your desktop or use File > Save As.

  • Scanned images (JPG, PNG, TIFF): Combine into a PDF using your scanner software or a tool like Adobe Acrobat before uploading.

  • Spreadsheets (XLSX): Save or print to PDF if the content is relevant to your chronology.

Adding more documents after creation

If your matter has more than 10,000 pages, you can still upload everything. After generating your initial chronology, use the "Add More Documents" button to upload additional batches.

  1. Upload your first batch of up to 10,000 pages and generate the chronology.

  2. Open the matter and click "Add More Documents".

  3. Upload the next batch of up to 10,000 pages.

  4. Repeat as needed. There is no limit to how many times you can add more documents.

This is especially useful for large personal injury, commercial litigation, or family law matters where document volumes regularly exceed tens of thousands of pages.

Files that cause silent failures

Known limitations:

-- Password-protected PDFs will fail and throw an error. This is one of the most common reasons files cannot be validated. Remove the password before processing — this can typically be done by duplicating the file on your computer.

-- Duplicate filenames can cause files to be skipped silently. If you have multiple files with the same name (e.g., two files named Letter.pdf), rename them to be unique before uploading.

-- iManage .nrl files are linked references, not actual documents. If you use iManage, export the underlying documents (as PDF or DOCX) rather than uploading the .nrl shortcut files.

If this doesn't work

If files are being rejected unexpectedly or uploads are failing within these limits, try the following:

  • Confirm the file is not password-protected.

  • Check that the file extension is PDF, DOCX, EML, or MSG.

  • Check for duplicate filenames and rename any matches.

  • See our Troubleshooting file upload errors article for detailed step-by-step troubleshooting.
