Cannot Edit Fact Explorer Questions

How to Fix a Typo or Change a Fact Explorer Question

Quick answer: Fact Explorer questions cannot be edited after submission. To correct a typo or change your question, ask the question again with the correct wording. The original question will remain in your history unless you delete it (deletion is permanent).

If you are trying to find specific information in your documents, Fact Explorer may be the fastest route. Ask Mary a direct question and she will find the answer with full source references -- no scrolling required. Look for the Fact Explorer tab on your matter.

Why Questions Cannot Be Edited

Once you submit a question in Fact Explorer, both the question and its generated answer are stored as a pair. Editing the question text after the fact would create a mismatch between the question and the answer it produced. To maintain the integrity of your research trail, questions are locked after submission.

This is a current product limitation. We have passed this feedback to our product team.

How to Correct a Question

  1. Ask the question again with the correct wording. Fact Explorer will generate a new answer based on the corrected question.

  2. The original question (with the typo) will remain in your Fact Explorer history.

  3. If you want to remove the original, you can delete it. However, be aware that deletion is permanent -- the question and its answer cannot be recovered. See our article "Can I Recover a Deleted Fact Explorer Question?" for more detail.

Before deleting: If the original question (despite the typo) produced a useful answer, save that answer externally before deleting. Copy the answer text into a Word document or your practice management system. Once deleted, it cannot be retrieved.

Tips for Getting It Right First Time

Since questions cannot be edited, it is worth taking a moment to review before submitting:

  • Read your question back before pressing submit. Check for typos, missing words, and ambiguous phrasing.

  • Be specific. A clear, focused question produces a more useful answer. For example, on a criminal law matter, "What did the witness say about the events of 14 March 2024?" is more likely to return a targeted answer than "What did the witness say?"

  • Use names and dates where possible. Fact Explorer searches your documents for matching content, so including specific details helps it find the right information.

If This Doesn't Work

  1. If your corrected question returns "Not able to answer," the issue may be with how the question is phrased rather than the typo. See our article "Why Fact Explorer Says 'Not Able to Answer' and How to Get Better Results" for tips on rephrasing.

  2. If you are experiencing other issues with Fact Explorer (such as the tab not appearing on your matter), see "How to Get Fact Explorer on Your Matter."
