How to Focus Mary's Analysis on Specific Information in Documents

Last updated: September 30, 2025

Mary extracts all facts from your documents by default, but you can guide the AI to focus on specific information that's most relevant to your case. This is particularly useful when dealing with detailed documents like medical records where you only need certain types of information.

Using Matter Summary to Target Relevant Information

The most effective way to focus Mary's analysis is through the Matter Summary feature:

  1. Add key information to the "Key Issues" section: Include the specific types of information you want Mary to prioritize (e.g., "major health events, significant injuries, general mental health issues").

  2. Use the "Additional Notes" section: List information that is not relevant to your case

  3. Remove irrelevant parties: Delete people, parties, entities, and any other information that aren't highly relevant to the matter

  4. Click "Save Changes": This generates effective relevance scoring based on your inputs

Filtering Results by Relevance

After updating your Matter Summary, Mary will assign relevance ratings to facts based on your specified focus areas. You can then:

  • Filter your chronology view to show only "Very High" and "High" relevance facts

  • Click the "i" button to check the rationale behind relevance ratings

  • Edit the Matter Summary as needed to refine the relevance generation

This approach allows you to see a focused summary without deleting any facts, while ensuring Mary prioritizes the information most important to your case.

Theming

You can also focus on specific information through our newly released theming feature.

Theming allows you to create views that filters for facts with certain themes (ie.g. Employment History, Incident, Medical, etc.).

Theming is already released for personal injury, and will be released for family law, and other legal matters shortly.

For Single Document Analysis

If you're working with a single document (like a medical report), you can:

  1. Upload the document as its own chronology

  2. Select the document as a "key document" during the upload process

  3. Mary will automatically generate a Matter Summary with an overview of the report

  4. Edit the Key Issues section to specify what you want to focus on

  5. Filter the results by relevance as described above

This method is particularly effective for getting targeted summaries from complex documents while maintaining the ability to access all extracted information when needed.
