Files Stuck at 'Pending Upload'
Last updated: February 23, 2026
Why Your Files Are Stuck at "Pending Upload"
Quick answer: Files showing "pending upload" almost always means the "Upload & Continue" button has not been clicked. Selecting files does not start the upload automatically. Click the "Upload & Continue" button to begin processing your documents.
Tip: If you're trying to find specific information in your documents, Fact Explorer may be the fastest route. Ask Mary a direct question and she'll find the answer with full source references -- no scrolling required. Look for the Fact Explorer tab on your matter.
The Most Common Cause
When you select files to upload in Mary, they appear in a list with a "pending" status. This is expected. The upload does not begin automatically when you drag and drop or browse for files.
You must click the "Upload & Continue" button to start the actual upload. Until you do, files will remain in the pending state indefinitely.
The Correct Upload Flow
Select your files. Drag and drop files into the upload area, or click "Browse" to select them from your computer. Your files will appear in a list showing their names and sizes.
Review the file list. Check that all the documents you want are included. Remove any you do not need by clicking the remove icon next to the file name.
Click "Upload & Continue." This is the step that triggers the actual upload. You will see a progress indicator as files are uploaded.
Wait for the upload to complete. Do not close your browser tab or navigate away until the upload finishes. Once complete, you will be taken to the next step in the matter setup.
Keep your browser open. Closing the tab or navigating away during an active upload will interrupt it. Wait for the upload to fully complete before moving on.
If Files Are Still Stuck After Clicking "Upload & Continue"
If you have clicked the button and files remain stuck at "pending" or the progress bar is not moving, try these steps in order:
Hard refresh your browser. Press Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac) to force a full page reload.
Re-select your files and try again. After refreshing, you will need to add your files to the upload area again and click "Upload & Continue."
Clear your browser cache for app.marytechnology.com and retry. Cached data from an older version of the platform can occasionally interfere.
Try a different browser. If you are using Safari, try Chrome or Edge instead.
Uploading a Large Number of Files
Mary can handle large uploads of up to 10,000 pages per session. For very large document sets (common in workers compensation or commercial disputes with extensive discovery), processing may take up to 120 minutes depending on complexity. You will receive an email notification when processing is complete.
If your document set exceeds 10,000 pages, use "Add More Documents" to upload additional batches after the first has been processed.
Known Limitations
Supported file types: Mary currently accepts PDF, DOCX, EML, and MSG files. If you are trying to upload JPEGs, PNGs, or other image files, convert them to PDF first. Files in unsupported formats may appear to upload but will not be processed. Note: The range of supported file types will be expanding significantly in the near future.
Uploading documents consumes credits. Approximately 1 credit per page is used when documents are processed into a chronology. Credits are shared across all users at your firm.
If This Doesn't Resolve Your Issue
Note the number of files and total size you are trying to upload
Take a screenshot of the upload screen showing the stuck state
Note your browser type and version (e.g., Chrome 122, Safari 17)
