Supported files and upload limits

Last updated: September 24, 2026

Use this guide to check current formats and limits before uploading. These formats and limits apply to both new and older matters. For the upload sequence and illustrations, see adding documents.

Supported formats

  • Documents: PDF, DOC and DOCX.

  • Spreadsheets: XLSX and XLS.

  • Emails: EML and MSG.

  • Archives: ZIP.

  • Images: PNG, JPEG, BMP and WebP.

Mary checks the actual format, not just the filename extension. Renaming a file does not convert it. For an unlisted format, check with Mary support before preparing a large intake.

Split an oversized batch into smaller batches. An individual file must still meet its own limit; splitting the surrounding batch does not fix an oversized file.

Review the contents detected inside a ZIP. The archive can contain unsupported or rejected files even when the ZIP itself is within its size limit.

These are upload and processing limits, rather than a processing-time estimate or total matter storage allowance.

Spreadsheet page estimates

Spreadsheets use a page-equivalent estimate: the approximate page count used for processing and credits. It can differ from the number of tabs or printed sheets in the workbook.

Review the estimate before processing a large workbook. See credits and usage for how completed processing uses credits.

Rejected or skipped files

When adding files to an existing matter, start at + Add files. Review the selected files, then use Needs Attention to review any reason beside a file before selecting Process. An unsupported format, damaged file, size limit and duplicate warning need different actions. Keep the original source while resolving the issue.

After processing, check the files in Sources. The troubleshooting guide explains the status labels.

Follow upload and processing troubleshooting if the reason is unclear or the corrected file still does not complete.
